AccountAbility's governance structure for the AA1000 series of Standards comprises an independent Standards Board and two specialist Technical Committees. This structure helps ensure that the standards remain credible and internationally-accepted, and drive further development and expansion. AccountAbility serves as the secretariat of the AA1000 standards.
At the heart of the governance structure is an independent, diverse AA1000 Standards Board. The Board is responsible for developing strategy, work plans, and standard setting procedures, approving final standards, and assisting with fundraising and outreach. The Board has no financial decision-making authorit, although the Board may express opinions or recommendations in relation to financial matters. Financial responsibility rests with AccountAbility. Members of the AA1000 Standards Board are as follows:
The Board is supported by two committees that oversee the technical development of the AA1000 Standard. One technical committee is responsible for the the AccountAbility Principles Standard (AA1000APS) and the Assurance Standard (AA1000AS); the other focuses on the Stakeholder Engagement Standard (AA1000SES). The technical committees make recommendations on the technical content of standards to the Board, which has responsibility for final approval.
